How Open Source Projects Survive Poisonous People
I found this talk at google recently about how large-scale open source projects deal with a lot of tricky problems involving people. I thought it might be good advice for some of the developers of Open Source Uru whenver the source actually gets released :) It's long but worth it if you're intereste...

Re: Replay live events with NPCs?
Remember Myst IV? That item you had that would replay "memories" from certain locations? It was a relatively good gameplay device to give you the backstory for the ages. Perhaps something like that could be used to "replay" NPC actions that you missed. Yeesha magic could be used to explain it away I...

Re: Suggestions voting system?
Is the bugtracker "live" or is it just being tested? Since it's not linked from the main openuru page or the wiki, I assumed it wasn't really to be taken seriously yet...

Re: Suggestions voting system?
I'm not really talking about a way of organizing detailed design plans for feature additions, but rather to get the feel of what the community wants to see happen and where the priorities should be. Google Moderator or a similar interface would be ideal for this. People could write simple suggestion...

Re: Cleaning Up Instancing
Maybe "hand cloths" link you to where the cloth is, but "shell cloths" link you to where the cloth was when you touched it (minus the rotation of the planet, etc)? Anyway, I chalk "using the savegame mechanic as a puzzle step" up as one of those "experimental" puzzle ideas in uru that may have looke...

Suggestions voting system?
Since the announcement of open source Uru, we've seen lots of great ideas and suggestions being hashed out across many forums in the myst community. As JWPlatt suggests here , we should have some way of storing and organizing all these ideas and suggestions, before developers get bogged down into th...

Re: Idea for improving performance in public spacing
I would like to put in my vote for two client-side improvements I'd like to see: Only render the closest n visible avatars (where n is configurable by the player, or dynamically adjusts to maintain a target framerate). Avatars can smoothly fade from being rendered to not-rendered (Anyone played the ...

Re: Cleaning Up Instancing
public Ages shouldn't include the rewards. However, that doesn't seem to satisfy people who feel that accessing later parts of the Age - those hidden behind puzzles - is itself a reward. Yeah, that's basically my stance. But I'm also worried about people accidentally going to the public version of ...

Re: Cleaning Up Instancing
I just need to chime in here and voice my strong opposition to any system that makes it easy to get to a public version of a puzzle/journey age without having first solved the age yourself or with a group. It's one thing to have spoilers and walkthroughs posted around the internet. It's an entirely ...

Re: Nexus 2.0
I'm surprised by the nay-saying. Some of the ideas I've suggested are a bit ambitious but most of the important ones are definitely accomplishable. Especially given that we will have the source code, and we have many accomplished programmers in our fandom. Also, I expect different alternative KI/Nex...
