Unable to complete installlation of Client

I am getting a repeated error saying that a file is not available on the server that is needed in the install. I have copied all the folders as requested and created a new game directory in My Programs and the download starts but stops with an error.

is there a problem with the server?

Assuming that you’re talking about the Minkata shard (whose forum is here): See this topic. Minkata hasn’t been updated to MOULa build 918 yet, so it still expects files from build 912. If you don’t have these anymore, you can’t play until Minkata is updated.

There is however little reason to play on Minkata right now, as there is nothing to test there that isn’t also on MOULa.

Thread moved to more appropriate forum ;)

Yep, what Christian said. Hopefully it won't be too long a wait.

thank you both

by MOULa do you mean the original MOUL set up or is that another shard? here at Open ? I am new to this set up so i am easily confused. I had assumed Minkata was the onlly shard here but maybe very wrong. thanks

MOULa is the shard that Cyan runs now (and is available at the original MOUL website at http://www.mystonline.com).

Minkata that is run here is the final testing shard for most fan-contributed fixes and updates that are targeted to go back into MOULa, so it looks very much like Cyan's shard (although as we accumulate fixes it offers a preview of what is to appear there assuming Cyan accepts all the changes currently staged in Minkata.)

Currently there is no licensing agreement from Cyan that allows a private shard such as Minkata to redistribute the game "content" files (the textures, models, audio, etc). So in order to use Minkata you need to first install a copy of MOULa (and agree to that shard's license terms), and then make a separate installation of the Minkata shard (which is missing the content files), and finally copy the content files from where MOULa was installed on your computer's disk into the area where Minkata was installed on your computer's disk. At some time we hope a license to permit us to host those content files will eliminate the need for this extra work, but for now that's how the shard installation works.

Welcome to Minkata, Dr. Cris!

Hey Cris! Welcome to the Minkata shard. You might want to subscribe to the PING! thread so you can be alerted by e-mail once the update has been made. Then, when you're ready to try again to join the shard, be sure to check out my thread, Minkata Shard Testers Guide (in laymen's terms) which should have everything you need to know or at least point you in the right direction. Hope to see you in cavern soon.

Any news? Thought I'd ask, following rarified's comment on the URU live forum that when the web hosting service went down, we probably couldn't play Minkata - well, some of us can't play Minkata irrespective of this, for the above reason!

Are you waiting for Cyan to give you details of what they did to MOULa? Or do you have this, and it's now a question of implementing in Minkata any extra things Cyan did in build 918? is this a big task? Not wanting to hurry anyone, just to have an idea of what's involved.

We still haven't arrived at a decision about merging the two branches (but we're close).

In the meantime I set about to refresh Minkata with the 1.918 files, but was distracted during the week. I expect I can finish this so you will be able to install Minkata again (and indeed existing Minkata users will need to update their data files) with MOULa client files.

I'll send a note out on the PING! thread when this is done (and the status banner on the launcher will mention it as well).

Yes, that, on both counts. I think I’ll make a mention of this at the AGM today. I don’t quite think we’re close, but maybe rarified is closer than I am. :) The largest part of the task (and one that I haven’t even started yet) is unifying the project files – we got the project files that Cyan used to build the MOULa client now, but these don’t work for us because Cyan’s setup includes additional parts that we don’t have (such as the server source code, CCR client source code, and closed-source libraries like EAX). Conversely, our projects that we have been developing in our open source repositories don’t work for Cyan. We’re hoping to arrive at something that for the largest possible part works for both, so that we don’t have to maintain two diverging sets of files and can reduce the workload on Cyan to integrate fan updates a little.

Updating Minkata to 918 files without a new client first is probably a good idea, as it could take a while to get everything else done.

Thanks to you both for the update. It was helpful to understand the issues. I think it would be really good if you did mention it at the AGM, Christian.

That sounds particularly alarming! :o

The (minor) good news for me is that I find I CAN play Minkata. I seem to recall an error message, assuming it wasn't going to work because of the MOULa upgrade, and not trying again, but rarified's comments made me revisit this, and all is now well. :)
