On Which Forums Should Topic Icons Be Enabled?

Post by JWPlatt »

Some forums like this one have topic icons enabled. Are they too cute for serious forums? Or do most people desire them as functional icons for all occasions?

It might be worth mentioning that topic icons are similar to these: Image Image Image

At present they can be attached to individual posts, but not to Topics.

Personally, I'm not that enthusiastic about the default ones. What might be cool was if someone could create an Uru themed icon pack that we could use instead; things that suggested a topic was for storyline, technical, etc. I guess that could be hard to do though.

I've put an icon on this topic (a star) and this post (Mr. Green face).

Hmm... After going through some of the post re-assembly stuff, I'm starting to see a possible alternaitve application for these icons (or something like them), but more at the post level: Sometimes a thread divides into two or more sub-threads. They be sufficiently related that a thread split isn't (yet) appropriate but you end up with interleaving posts that on first reading seem out of context. The problem also arises where posts have been merged from another thread. If something in a thread, say, spawns a fresh idea then the post containing the new idea could get the "think bubble" icon on it, and replies related to it all use the same icon.

It'd need a bit of poster discipline or mod interpretation, but it might help people follow the text and would aid subsequent thread splitting if it eventually became necessary.

I tend to use the default icon, whatever it is. Unless it is a special topic or I think it needs to standout. I'm image oriented so they help me.
