Assets: People (skills, time/opportunity)

Post by Dot »

The first stage of Phase 1 is to inventory assets. This thread is to look at the skills and time individuals might bring to the open-source Uru project.

Back in October 2008, Robert the Rebuilder started a poll on the GoW forum with this post:
Robert The Rebuilder wrote:Suppose that Cyan was willing to take on unpaid intern developers for a MORE development team. (Put aside your skepticism for the moment, please.) Would you be willing to help get MORE started? More importantly, would you have the time to do this over the next 6 months or so?

If you are available, please reply with the following information:
  • Average number of hours per week that you can devote to MORE development
  • Whether you are a student, employed (part/full time), or both
  • Number of months/years experience in the following areas:
    • General programming (C++/Python)
    • Plasma engine
    • Database management
    • Bug tracking software
    • "e-Commerce"/online payment systems
    • Server software engineer
    • Networking or multiplayer gaming systems
    • System administrator
    • Quality assurance testing

Note that such a team could theoretically work on bug fixes after MORE goes online, e.g. fixing the maintainer wall, getting heek to be reliable, restore marker quest high scores, etc.

BIG DISCLAIMER: Cyan has said nothing about doing this project; this is all speculative. The poll is merely to gauge the level of interest in the fan developer community.
Will this be a helpful way of gathering information about the skills and time individuals can offer to open-source Uru?

BIG DISCLAIMER 2: This project forum is guild neutral, and welcomes contributions from everyone. No guild membership is required or assumed -- just the willingness to work together and with respect for each other's skills and knowledge.

We need to get the team currently working in Alcugs server evolution (diafero) and content hacking (Dustin, GPNMilano, Race) involved in this discussion.

Could you perhaps contact them, Chacal?

Mind you, GPN Milano is already doing good stuff in the Suggestions area here; perhaps her ears will be burning :D

Ok, I'll start. Following your format:
  • Average number of hours per week that you can devote to MORE development
    == 8-10
  • Whether you are a student, employed (part/full time), or both
    == Full time employed (at least until January's layoff notices go out :? )
  • Number of months/years experience in the following areas:
    • General programming (C++/Python)
      == C 30y; C++ 15y; Python (casual) 4y
    • Plasma engine
      == -none-
    • Database management
      == (casual) 2y
    • Bug tracking software
      == 10y
    • "e-Commerce"/online payment systems
      == -none-
    • Server software engineer
      == 25y
    • Networking or multiplayer gaming systems
      == 25y networking (anyone remember what an Imp was?)
    • System administrator
      == 30y
    • Quality assurance testing
      == 18y

I'll follow:
  • Average number of hours per week that you can devote to MORE development
    == 4-6 (I can probably only manage some weekend evenings right now)
  • Whether you are a student, employed (part/full time), or both
    == Full time employed
  • Number of months/years experience in the following areas:
    • General programming (C++/Python)
      == C 18y; C++ 15y; Visual C++ 11y; Python just scratched the surface
    • Plasma engine
      == -none-
    • Database management
      == (casual) 3-4y
    • Bug tracking software
      == 11y
    • "e-Commerce"/online payment systems
      == a little, about 2 years ago, working PayPal into a website
    • Server software engineer
      == -none-
    • Networking or multiplayer gaming systems
      == 20y networking (on-off, but mostly not on TCP/IP :( )
    • System administrator
      == 20y (on-off, small scale)
    • Quality assurance testing
      == 18y

  • Average number of hours per week that you can devote to MORE development
    == I would gladly devote lots of time.
  • Whether you are a student, employed (part/full time), or both
    == Student
  • Number of months/years experience in the following areas:
    • General programming (C++/Python)
      == I'm just barely starting learning how programming...
    • Plasma engine
      == Just basic Blender ages
    • Database management
      == A few months now
    • Bug tracking software
      == 2y
    • "e-Commerce"/online payment systems
      == I've been an end user many times, never a manager.
    • Server software engineer
      == none
    • Networking or multiplayer gaming systems
      == I've only ever run uru servers, but I've gotten 2 of those up and running.
    • System administrator
      == Only for myself.
    • Quality assurance testing
      == about 1.5y
I really want to run a server, UU-style...I also would help test stuff, but I'm afraid I don't have much to offer development-wise. :?

Updated on 6/20 for current sitrep. --TSK
-----=====-----

I'm interested, but my job in the Financial Sector eats my life at times (especially right now). I'm trying to have a life outside of work; This could become part of it if things can finally take off.

My work hours are 3rd Shift, US/Eastern (7 years and counting at that position with the company). Unfortunately that has some disadvantages right now, as I have to get up early and goto work for meetings sometimes.

I do have skills that could be invaluable, if there is a way to get back on UNIX:

System Administraton:
Solaris - 13 years and counting.
Linux - off and on for 7 years and counting.
VM - About 7 months now, but diving deep quickly. We're concentrating on ESX/ESXi for x86/x64 and LDOM for the Sparc side.
--> Specialist in Backup/DR/BR (EMC Networker + lots of home-brew stuff)
--> Specialist in C Shell (mostly in mission-critical system monitoring) as well as nawk, Perl (a bit more now, enough to discover when its *not* the right tool for the job).

Database Admin/Manage:
--> Sybase, 13+ years and counting (including parameter tuning for various hardware). Solaris and Linux only.
--> Oracle: Some passing knowledge, in particular the RAC and ASM subsystems. would require reading up on some things, but could probably look at it.
--> MySQL: again, passing knowledge (which is sad, given my site is on a LAMP stack). I've been poking at that through work, as a couple DBs are on dev servers.
--> I can be a *very* wicked SQL writer at times, but require at least passable documentation on the tables to do it.

Bug tracking software: Experience with varying types, including Bugzilla (2 years collectively), Remedy (2 yrs), Jira (6 mos), and Trac (about 2 months).

I do have some Windows experience (thanks to some early work with libsecondlife) but prefer to stay firmly in UNIX, thank you. :p [This is changing, but under some duress... :p ]

The company I work for maintains about 2000 Solaris boxes (Sun hardware, SPARC and x64) throughout three continents, most of them being in the US.

  • Average number of hours per week that you can devote to MORE development
    == Will vary too much to make a specific commitment - sorry!
  • Whether you are a student, employed (part/full time), or both
    == Full time employed with bad commute
  • Number of months/years experience in the following areas:
    • General programming (C++/Python)
      == 15 years, C development on Solaris and Linux platforms. Almost no C++. Have worked with Perl, some Python.
    • Plasma engine
      == None
    • Database management
      == Practically none
    • Bug tracking software
      == Have administered PureDDTS in the past; have used GNATS in the past, and currently use Bugzilla at work
    • "e-Commerce"/online payment systems
      == None
    • Server software engineer
      == Nothing directly analogous to Uru
    • Networking or multiplayer gaming systems
      == None
    • System administrator
      == ~ 1 year of professional system administration experience on Solaris and Linux, when past job didn't have an official position for it; have run own Linux box at home for ~ 12 years
    • Quality assurance testing
      == Lots of experience with this, wish I spent less time testing and more time coding ;)
The music is reversible, but time is not.
