Sirikata?

Post by Nalates »

Sirikata is the WebGL Standford project to develop modeling software for browser based 3D worlds.

Sirikata FAQ

Kata Labs has instructions for installing WebGL. WARNING, the install disables some security features in the CHROME browser.

WebGL is a sibling of OpenGL and is a similar to but different from O3D.

Building in WebGL (very basic). WebGL is the root Sirikata is building on top of. For content creators information is in the wiki here: Sirikata Content Creation for WebGL

Building for WebGL via Sirikata is similar to building for Blue Mars. The primary modeling tools are 3DMax and Maya. They say Maya exports to COLLADA for use in 3DMax which then export to Sirikata using an OGRE exporter. That seems rather convoluted... While they say most of their team works in Maya it seems they must also use 3DS Max... I suspect it is likely one could use Blender too, but it would be tough.

This is very young technology. So, I am not at all sure it is useful to the Must-Uru community, yet. That it allows a world to be displayed in a browser has some advantages. The videos linked on the Sirikata site show a world and avatars that look pretty good.
