Purpose of Grid Hosting & Financial Resources

Post by Nalates »

This section is for those wanting to offer or find hosting services for Myst/Uru-style worlds. It is also for those considering how to finance their worlds. This is NOT a license for hosting services to spam the forum! It is hoped that fans wanting to get involved with hosting will use Open Uru resources and work with Open Uru NET and/or COM. There are ideas and tentative plans in play. Check posts and ask to find out what is being planned and how you can participate or add your services.

Review and opinion of the various hosting services should also go in this section.

Setting up eCommerce systems available in the various worlds is usually part of the technical discussions in Hypergrid & Second Life or Client & Server Software. Why one may or may not want to add eCommerce or how well it works should go here. How well various hosting companies have implemented the eCommerce systems and how well they work should go here.

We know that in the Myst/Uru community that financing and for-profit matters are controversial issues. OpenUru.org acknowledges both sides of the financial and for-profit issues and various merits of both sides' arguments. However, this forum is for fans on both sides of the debate. The position in this forum is that all fans have an equal right to pursue and make their choices. It is not intended to force views expressed here on the community. Rather, through rational and respectful discussion good information will emerge to enable fans to make personal choices.

Any Cyan restrictions on financing, profit, and use of their content in those contexts will be addressed when Cyan publishes their licenses.

I think Nalates has set out the purpose of this forum pretty well in the post above, and I add the following as an addendum, simply to point out why the financial aspects are an important consideration for everyone.

Hosting any online game does not come at zero-cost. Some of those people who have operated sims within SL and in other realms will tell how substantial the rental costs of those environments can be. The types of server platform that are being considered as suitable for a basic Open URU hosting solution are discussed in the System Concepts forum and are not exactly cheap. Even running a home based server is not without cost: It uses internet bandwidth that must be paid for, there's the electricity to run the machine, and buying and maintaining the hardware in the first place. It is only reasonable that the owner should expect some contribution towards the running cost, even if not-for-profit.

While there may be altruistic souls out there who would generously donate the provision of a host, trying to run anything of any significant capacity and maintain some prospect of long term continuity will almost certainly require the users of that system to "pay their way". The potential for interlinking of grids may then present some interesting challenges in ensuring equitable payment for use of a host.
