OpenURU.org Resources & Tools

I am going to add a wiki as soon as possible, but more generally, I'd like to hear about any other tools which would benefit a community of projects. Keep in mind that specialized tools should only be considered upon a project's need for them.

First up, concerning wikies:

Over at MOUL, rarified started a topic called "A Proposal: an Uru Documentation Project" and posted:

Twiki has been monetized and is now commercial open source in an alliance with Sun. Developer outrage has manifested in a fork to Foswiki:
http://foswiki.org/

I was going to install MediaWiki, but I am open to what people like best and find easiest to use for the features it has.

Any thoughts on this?

MediaWiki is definitely my favorite of the wiki systems I've edited on, so that would get my vote, but honestly, since you're the one managing it, you should be free to choose whichever one you feel will be easiest/best for you.

The MediaWiki sites I see look fine; I can't imagine there are big differences w/Twiki (which I wasn't aware had been migrated to a company that may or may not be my employer  ). I'd be happy to try it.

The customer comes first. ;)

Other wiki examples are:
WikkaWiki
PmWiki
TikiWiki
phpWiki

And then there's the related idea of Content Management Systems like Joomla, etc. So I'd also like to hear about preferences for that as well.

GoMa uses Joomla, and I like it. I prefer it to the Wiki to be honest -- but that's probably because Joomla feels more like some of the tools I would use in RL editing. I've never really got into Wiki keeping.

I'd go for mediaWiki too. In part because I'm comfortable with using it, in part because most people are famliar with navigating Wkipedia, but also because there is a ready pool of extensions available if necessary, much like phpBB.

MediaWiki is a good option - partially because people are most used to it. I think it'd be best as a documentation tool - the article/discussion page model is very good for that. I'm not sure what extensions make it more friendly to group collaboration, however. One of Twiki's better features is their 'web' feature, which makes dividing up projects pretty easy. I don't like the namespace version that is default in MediaWiki - seems unintuitive.

MediaWIki is now available at http://wiki.OpenURU.org

The wiki is a blank slate. It will be worked on as time permits.

Login is required to view and edit pages. This can change if the requirement becomes an issue. It is a separate login from the forum.

Back up your work!

Please PM admin with requests for any further tools your project might need.
