My source cursors (.SVGs) look much better than the ones in that commit fixing both the irregularities and the blurriness (which was my goal as well), but unfortunately as you found the default alpha support is considerably lacking. I'm currently working on a patch to add in libpng support, which should allow us to use either cursor set (or a mix, whatever pleases) with full alpha fidelity.
Nice idea with the shadow on the circle; that looks great!

A little over two years later, mission accomplished! The cursors have landed in MOULa.
