Re: Cleaning Up Instancing
My explanation for the different behavior between Gahreesen and Ahnonay cloths is this: When you touch the Gahreesen cloths, they're already moving, so the linking spot they register moves as well. On the other hand, the Ahnonay cloths are stationary when you touch them, so the linking spot is stati...

Re: Cleaning Up Instancing
I hope you don't mind if I try to summarize a lot of the discussion that's gone on here: There are two desires for good gameplay that can oppose each other: The desire for the users to have as much customizing at their disposal as possible, so that they can enhance their experience in as many ways a...

Re: Mobile/Remote Access to Uru
I would love to see a small, auxiliary program with all the functionality of the big KI, but without the client-side baggage of 3d rendering. Essentially, I'd like to open my KI on the surface, able to send and receive KI mail and invites, manage my preferences and groups, and chat with anyone I wou...

Re: Cleaning Up Instancing
Thanks for the answers, Marten, and I like the latest revisions. I also put in my vote for the idea of having every linking book UI be identical, as I think it unifies the gameplay experience and makes any system easier to learn. In particular, I'm imagining the following user interface or an equiva...

Re: Cleaning Up Instancing
I'm a bit unclear on Marten's idea: Is it the case that each person can only belong to one group at a time? If someone belongs to a group, does that person have no access to his private Ages? If the group's Ages are the private Ages of the leader, what happens to them when the leadership role change...

Re: Visual effects: linking avatars and Linking Books
It does. All Myst Linking Books we've ever seen were activated AFTER construction on Myst was finished. I'm not sure what you mean by "activated". As far as we know, the Myst book presented at the beginning of Myst had last been used when Atrus fell through the fissure on Riven, at which point ther...

Re: Cleaning Up Instancing
I'm glad such thoughtful people are looking at these issues, balancing game mechanics with IC considerations. My opinions on the linking rules for instancing seem not to be uncommon: By default, linking books in an instanced Age go to identically instanced Ages. Exceptions should be clearly and syst...
