All the updates seem to be working well. But I do have a concern about one. The Copy & Paste functions works perfectly. I can see a definitive use for them especially among the Greeters and other folk who help out. But I wonder if you've invented a new tool for Griefers and their worse compatriots. I've determined that the limit on copy and paste feature is 500 characters - including spaces etc. With a little practice I've been able to easily copy and paste about 2,000 characters a minute and my damaged hands aren't very fast. I'm assuming the maximum paste can be altered. After "listening" to several female Avatars get verbally assaulted by miscreants I'd be happier to see a smaller limit... say 200 characters or so. It obviously won't solve the problem but it will slow them down. Am I the only person concerned?

Yes, you are. If somebody really wanted to enter text into uru automatically, they can already. Every heard of BabelBot? Copy&Paste is a convenience feature. Limiting it would do nothing to avoid any griefing, and would simply make life more difficult for the legitimate users.

@Branan - I think that's an unnecessarily abrupt and dismissive answer. Or at least it comes across that way.

There's a big difference between using a third-party tool and having a "native" copy and paste feature: As Branan says it's a convenience and I know there have been many times I've wished I could just copy/paste something, but I can see Henry's point that it's maybe convenient for mis-use too. On the other hand, the indications I have are that griefing is a relatively small problem - and by that I mean "small" as in confined to a small number of perpetrators, not the impact on their victims, which can be profound.

I think we need be wary about restricting features that the general user finds "useful" in order to deal with a knee-jerk reaction to what currently amounts to no more than 0.1% of the user base who want to mis-behave. Further, I'm inclined to agree with Branan that limiting the copy/paste rate wouldn't do much to inhibit griefers unless it was taken to the extent that its general usefulness becomes seriously impaired, and it will do nothing to griefers using voice chat.

I don't really want this to turn into another thread on what to do about griefers - I may split these posts out into another thread if this is how the discussion develops.

What I would like to see is an automatic chat recorder. It's a matter of kilobytes. See... sometimes I forgot to type in /startlog when I enter a public age. It's then hard to go back on the offender and state: "Pardon me "Gentleman" could you be kind enough to repeat me that I'm not more good than a wh... on the streets in portuguese so I can record you and send this log to Cyan right away?"

The thing is that there's someone right now in MOULa that is ALWAYS in Public Ae'gura and I'm waiting, I'm praying God every day that he makes a mistake in the near future because I want him OUT right NOW!!! The issue is that I'm still seeing him and I CAN'T do anything because I forgot to start a chatlog when it mattered once!

Make it mandatory for everyone then spread the good news so everyone is aware of this feature. You get assaulted by a jerk ----> go in your personal folders look inside URU Live/log folder and sent the chat0.log or whatever the number that HAS BEEN RECORDED AUTOMATICALLY.

After a cycle of chat0, chat1, chat2, chat3, the logs can begin back at chat0 but at least you have time and WAYS to protect yourself.

I talk a lot with Henry, he is a good buddy of mine and he knows that I have sometimes hard time coping with miscreants

So Henry is just the one who took the lead this time...but we are legion who wants something more protective. As for copy & paste, I once copied a complete text which wasn't intended to be putted in URU. I copied it from Word into the ... you know what (the temporary memory thing) and I pasted it without wanting to. I pressed enter!!! The guy I was talking to was confused.

I've discussed this off-forum with a few other folks and I'm satisfied that "copy and paste" is more likely to be a good thing. Worst cast scenario I'm certain it could be turned off if needed.
But if we're asking for new features (and I know this is the wrong place) how about an eventual fix for the "you can't start a chat with the letter "Z"" bug?

That's probably a good candidate for a "Feature Request" in JIRA.

I think we've all done things like that when we've got more than one application running - I've pasted all sorts of stuff into the wrong places without immediately realising it  .

Minkata Shard Update Friday May 11, 2012, 8pm US/MDT

Post by rarified »

A game client update has been installed tonight.

Changes in this update:
  • Bugfixes for features incorporated in April, to prepare for the May 21st change freeze
  • More improvements to video display geometry selection code
New or fixed features that require testing: (continue prior feature testing)
  • On boq – Allow plNotify…:
We cannot test that this fixes the bug on Minkata because we don’t have 16 million vault nodes yet (that’s no problem through, we have already tested that elsewhere), but we can test that it didn’t break anything else:
    • Upload stuff to imagers, preferably while others are watching
    • Just play the game – the changed code is involved in many places.
  • On D'Lanor - KI Player List Sorting:
How to test: Open the big KI and check sorting for all player lists
  • On D'Lanor - Fearless Quabs:
How to test on Minkata: Client - Annoying log messages replaced with less annoying messages ;) Server - The KeyError should no longer clutter up the server log files.
  • On Adam Johnson {Hoikas} - Landing Behaviors
How to Verify: The avatar should now land on the ground from jumps as in PotS. Therefore, standing jumps produce a full landing, downhill jumps produce a blended landing based on how far down the avatar fell, and uphill jumps produce no landing.
Thanks again for the help.

This is a huge job. Basically testers will have to run new avatars through each age again, both alone and together... For those who do not have the time for this I'll give some suggestions to get you started:
  • Relto bookshelf (linking, deleting/undeleting books)
  • Imagers (don't forget the pellet scores)
  • Kadish elevator
  • Various levers, switches and buttons
These places are directly affected (since they actually use the number variable that was fixed). Many other places are affected as well but these are somewhat less critical (they use a string variable and don't care about that number variable). Still, it would be great if at least a few people could test everything.

It can’t hurt to give a bit more emphasis to this: In this case, your testing is a great deal more valuable if you do it with multiple players present, verifying that everyone sees things happen the way they should, not only the one who caused the action.

It’s a bit short notice, but I wonder if we should hold tomorrow’s “funday” meeting of The Meeting Place neighborhood on Minkata? We could do an age or two with a group. It would be at 13:00 KI / 19:00 UTC, if anyone else wants to join.
