Minkata Update 2020.06.23 (Big News!)

Post by rarified »

Need I say more? This is what we’ve worked for over the last ... decade?

Minkata has been updated to include the first fan contributed ages from an intrepid artist, Doobes the Determined.

I know the unveiling of his ages has already occurred on Gehn with great fanfare. But I consider this step just as significant a milestone in the path to deploying fan content on the real MOULa servers. I now have confidence that the game client present on MOULa, and these ages are playing well together.

This is the last step before sending the age content to Cyan. I’m asking as much of the Uru community as we can muster to visit Minkata in the next couple of weeks, both individually as well as in groups. Wander both existing Uru ages as well as the new content, and really give things a workout. It is my goal to make sure what we deliver to Cyan slides into the official server without any issues, no matter how small.

When that time comes, I assure you I will make a post as soon as I hand off the new content.

With that said, here is what has been added. The Watchers’ Pub (reachable from the Nexus) has been altered to open one of the previously closed alcoves, and has a new linking book on a pedestal. That alcove is the one directly behind you when you link into the Pub. This book will take you to ChisoPreniv, a library that can be used to contain linking books to fan ages. Those of you who have explored these ages on Gehn and Minkata-alpha will know what to do from there. Those who have not, enjoy your exploration of the library.

The library has been designated as a non-instanced age, so everyone will link to the same place. You can bring friends along to meet there. I am hoping (and encouraging) Cyantists, past and present, to visit as well. Perhaps you may run into one of them.

If you have not signed up for Minkata, please see Tai’lahr’s layman’s guide to using Minkata here. It has a couple of outdated items (you no longer need to update DirectX yourself for example) but it gives a good outline how to get there.

As is usual with an update, please post issues and observations as replies to this thread. And thank you for your continued participation and patience.

This is it, everyone! The last big step before fan Ages come to MOULa! Let's do our part and test everything we can. Be sure to report bugs, big and small, right here so our talented team of programmers can fix things before we send it all off to Cyan for final testing on the staging server. The more we do here, the quicker that "final testing" will be and the quicker we see all this on MOULa!

Great job to everyone who helped to make this happen! :D

Thanks for all your hard work! Below I will list the bugs I have encountered so far.

Now minkata has the same odd mouse behavior as Gehn where if you look around in first person by holding right mouse button, you'll eventually start to see the cursor re-appear. This doesn't happen on moula, I don't remember it happening on minkata before but it may have done. https://youtu.be/jkC1Yf0_8UQ

Also experienced the same stack dump on exiting the game from a Bevin.

Also the chat text is still too small (reported earlier).

There is a new Hood, DRC42 Bevin, that permanently has 1 phantom inhabitant. Everything was in the initial state including two blank imagers. I uploaded my pellet score and my points went back to zero as expected but did not register in that Hood. Weirdly when I returned to my Hood the points were correctly recorded there.

I visited the top 10 Public Hoods. I found the Island Page in 4 of them (seems right) but only one clock which seems unusually low compared to MOULa.

I too have had an occasional access violation error message when quitting the game in recent weeks, but I haven't pinned it down to anything in particular, it seemed random whether I got one or not. My most recent one said "Call Stack (0 levels, truncated):"

I visited Doobes' gorgeous ages and I'm afraid they looked less gorgeous in Minkata than in Gehn. I don't have the technical vocabulary but they look sort of scratchy when I'm running round. It could be a frame rate thing? I went back to Gehn and they look smoooooth!

Great work to get us this far, rarified and everyone!

Thank you Dave, Henry and Treehugger! The fact the stack tracebacks have similar offsets points to a real problem.

I too have seen one crash/stack trace on exit as well. I'm going to try to reproduce this morning with a debugger helping.

Thanks for the opportunity to test this great event.
I have been testing on and off for 2 days now and have had 3 game stops
There have been no dumps.
All of the stops happened in various places but the spinning wheel update page is shown not spinning and a ding from my system signals a stop.
I have been able to locate the error block:
urulive error
SDL Desc Problem

This is all the info I have.

Today we toured the new ages as a group! It was so much fun to see so many people there, we're so close this being on MOULa I can taste it! Here are some new things I noticed on this visit.

Smoke trail/thin wispy arches in Chiso near the linking books
Edit: they're the ends of the god rays from the upper parts of the windows. Animated example added

I had a stack dump when I exited the program:
Spoiler

Code: Select all

UruLive.Live.1.918 - Minkata.176 - External.Release
Exception type: Access violation
Call stack (14 levels):
 0x00000000

   0x77E87C24
    0x77AC6359

       0x00B6F86E
        0x00B71111
         0x00B704DB
          0x00A19F12
           0x00A17B56
            0x00B6BE2E
             0x00B6A7E3
              0x00A17CB3
Also, for those that are curious, I made a boo boo with the Chiso Book in the Pub. If you were able to Link, you just got yourself a spiffy personal instance of the Age. :P That'll be fixed soon though, so don't expect it in MOULa.

As for why it froze some people in place, I think it had to do with accidentally clicking on an avatar while the Book GUI was up. That seemed to recreate the bug we were experiencing there. Too big of a crowd, too small of a room, I suppose. ;)

Thank you to allowing strangers to walk all over the new ages! Although it was more of a tour and less of a dedicated test, I hope you get some helpful feedback. I am not a regular around here, so my observations might not be unique.

One thing I want to point out is how "The Watchers Pub" is too long for my KI display, at least for Buddy locations. When someone is in The Watchers Pub, my KI displays that Buddy as being located in "The", yes just "The". (I did not take a screen shot, easy to replicate if you need it). Perhaps changing it to "Watchers" would be an easy fix?

Another minor quibble, which is more about my avatar in general: I am too short and/or cannot jump high enough to stand on the table to look outside the window in the new conference room. Can I get a stepstool?

(my other details similar to others above, if of any use. tl;dr= yup, me too):
I held back in the Watchers Pub as I watched the line of people try to use the linking book in the kitchen to get to Chiso. Once it stopped working for people, they all left by other means, but it did not look like overlapping avatars at that point, as they were well spaced apart. I waited until I was alone, and the book no longer worked: I clicked on it once, and it showed me the open page and let me click but nothing happened; the page left the screen and I was able to walk around, but returning to the book no longer did anything on a click. I even tried going to the Nexus book, hoping to reset a state somehow, and that page did appear on click, but the Chiso book did not reactivate. Oh well, it was a thought.

At the end of the day, I returned to my Relto, and I used the Logout button first, then click the Quit button, and got my own stack dump, just with different hex values.
