I think it's best not to temper to much with what's already there but work around, and keep things simple.
I mean I think it will already be tremendous work just to make the add-ons match Cyan quality.
My suggestion:
Start the game singleplayer at the Cleft. (This will minimize issues in terms of gameplay )
Two options - The explorer have to take side. One or the other.
1- The Yeesha's Path via relto and Journeys.
- At the only difference that I would make all the Journey Cloths Invisible until the end of yeesha speech at the imager.
Also, it would be nice if the Jouney Cloths would appear at random locations wich each new games.
- The KI will be available in Gareeshen or available in Relto.
- Note tha It will be totally possible to complete DRC Journey afterwards when retourning at the cleft.
In fact that could be Yeesha's reward.
2- The DRC Authorized path via the tunnels.
- That would be the contribution of the community with the help of Cyan. (Alamat Proposal sound's very interseting starting point)
- Note that's It's totally possible to come back at the Cleft at some point and Do Yeesah's Journey. You don't want to restrict people.
- Personnaly, I would place a fonctionnal KI dispenser in the first resting aera. So explorer can quickly contact friends.
- The explorers would then need a Ki to go further down in the shaft... (to call the elevator for exemple )
OR
-A KI bracelet could sit with DRC instructions on a shelf in the Cleft. The instruction will also tell the explorer how to enter the volcano..
- Fonctionnal Flashlight on the KI to do the Tunnels. That could be a compulsory accessory part of a maze puzzle.
Notes:
The KI is very important to allow people to make contact quickly with others. So you don't want to wait to long to get it.

Re: Community Project: The Great Shaft
And let's throw in my idea while we're at it.
Single Player Cleft (but TELL PEOPLE BEFOREHAND so they don't get all confused, and have some sort of help-chat or really extensive walkthrough). There's a box or pedestal, or something with Relto books (or Zandi just hands you one) for people who are confused or want to get out of the cleft fast. This is explained beforehand and there are signs/Zandi speeches to explain it there.
If you take the book, you can come back any time to get a Relto Page to begin the Journey. If you went all the way through the first time, the book already has that Relto Page.
All people get Reltos. This gives everyone a well-made completely canon explained home that is understandably replicated for everyone. The DRC just deals with it, like Esher deals with the "bahro abominations" like the slates.
You can sign up for a DRC "Authorized Explorer program" or something. You get a special add-on to your KI that lets you see special markers. You can collect them and then turn them in for small rewards like clothing and Relto objects (which you link to Relto).
The Great Shaft and tunnels are introduced later (which gives them more time to be made really good) as a new DRC approved area with all sorts of puzzles like those mentioned in this thread. You can access it from the (public) Cleft, and maybe it is the way to get to Ae'gura the DRC way (although you can get to 'hoods beforehand - and there is a bahro stone or something in Teledahn that takes you to Ferry Terminal, right?).
Oh yeah, and 'hoods have a link to Gahreeson or somewhere so you can get a KI (of course, if you took the Journey, you can get the KI through Gahreeson anyway).
