Self Service Uploading Client Crash Files

Post by rarified »

It's helpful if a significant error occurs to have a copy of the leftover memory from the game client before it disappears (also know as a memory dump or carcass ;) )

I've just installed some software on the OpenUru Foundry to give you a place to save those dump files, along with a brief description about what you were doing.

You can get to that service at https://foundry.openuru.org/files. You need to register for an account to keep your files seperate from others. Click on the link at the bottom of the home page to "Register as a new client". Don't worry about anything other than creating a username, password, and an email address the system can send you confirmations when you do things. Once there, you can use your browser to upload those memory dump files.

I've been encouraging people that encounter a crash on the client to do the following before clicking on the pop up window to close the crash information.
  1. Bring up the Windows Task Manager. The easiest way is to use the keyboard shortcut <control>-<shift>-<escape> (all three keys held down together).
  2. Look for the process "UruExplorer.exe" under the "Process" tab.
  3. Right-click on the line for "UruExplorer.exe", and it should give you the option to create a dump file. Click on that menu item.
  4. A popup window should appear showing you where the memory dump file is located. Use your browser to upload that file to the Foundry. Please enter a description about where you were playing (Minkata, Minkata-alpha), the build number (in the title bar, such as #190), the time and date the game crashed, and a brief description of what you were doing.
  5. Now you can exit the game, task manager, and close the dump window.
This will make it a lot easier to dig into the issues of game crashes rather than working from the "Call stack" window (or other less descriptive error windows).

Thank you all!

Just to add, the files are big and uploads can be slow, so I recommend you zip the file, if you know how! Mine (unzipped) took over 30 mins, be warned!

Not sure if we need to post here when we upload a file, but in case it helps: I uploaded a new one yesterday, after creating a small marker game as a test. (I didn't even play the game.)

Zipping the file reduced its size to 1/3 of its original 8-)
